In 1499, Cardinal Cisneros founded the first university in Castile here. The *Cervantes Prize* is awarded every year in this very building. The San Ildefonso Residence is inside it — in the **Philosophers' Courtyard** (Patio de los Filósofos) of the **Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso**, a **UNESCO World Heritage Site**.
