In 1499, Cisneros founded the University of Alcalá here, the heart of the world's first planned university city. The Cervantes Prize is awarded every year in this very building. The San Ildefonso Residence is inside it — in the Philosophers' Courtyard (Patio de los Filósofos) of the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
